Dr. Smith is a tourism and hospitality development
expert who has extensive professional experience in the Asia
Pacific, as well as North America and the Middle East. He has headed
large multi-disciplinary teams for the preparation of major tourism
development plans for government and the private sector.
His research has been presented at international industry and
academic conferences in Australia, Canada, China, Egypt, Hong Kong,
India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan,
Thailand, the USA and Vietnam as well as published widely in
academic and professional journals. His seminal models which detail
the development of coastal resorts have become standard theory. Dr.
Smith is frequently asked to deliver keynote addresses and to
moderate industry roundtables.
He is Interim Dean, Cornell-Nanyang Institute of Hospitality
Management. Previously, he was Director, Nanyang Executive Program;
Program Director, MBA (Hospitality and Tourism Management) degree;
and Program Director, B Business (Hospitality and Tourism
Management) degree at the Nanyang Technological University.
Dr. Smith holds the Doctor of Design (Urban and Landscape Planning),
Harvard University, and Master of Architecture, University of
Queensland. He is Life Fellow, Institute of Parks and Recreation
(Singapore); Fellow, Royal Australian Institute of Architects; and
Certified Professional Planner.
