Summer I Singapore
MH 6723 Corporate Finance
 
This course builds on the online courses in financial accounting and financial reporting. Topics include: applications of discounting techniques, evaluation of capital expenditures, estimating cost of capital, bond and stock valuation, portfolio theory, asset-pricing models, and capital-structure decisions. The course emphasizes valuation skills as a means to bring together the cost of capital, financing, and operating issues faced by a firm.

You will come to understand the financial impact of managerial decisions, know how to identify decisions that increase the value of a firm, and know how to properly evaluate investment, financing, and payout decisions. You also will know standard techniques of financial analysis, such as discounted cash-flow valuation, capital budgeting, risk analysis, and estimating the cost of debt and equity.

MH 6724 Managerial Accounting
  This introduction to managerial accounting covers cost behavior, cost classification, cost-volume-profit analysis, product costing, budgeting, variance analysis, cost estimation, cost allocations, customer-profitability analysis, managerial control systems, and performance measurement.

MH 6744 Competitive Strategies for the Hospitality Industry
  Strategic management considers the total enterprise, the industry and the competitive environment in which firms operate. This integrative capstone course focuses on how firms formulate, implement and evaluate corporate business strategies. The goal is for you to develop a mastery of the tools used to perform analyses of industry and competitors and to develop skill at evaluating and implementing strategies to sustain a firm's competitive advantage while generating superior value for customers.

  In covering the strategies that enable companies to attract, develop, and retain high-quality employees, attention will be given to selection, compensation, performance appraisal, and career management. In each of these areas, the focus is on the return on the human-resource investment.

MH 6772 Information Systems Management
  Information Technologies-based information systems are important to almost all organizations as a primary means for ensuring efficient operations and effective decision-making. Through this course, you will become comfortable with all aspects of information systems decision-making, including systems analysis and design, systems selection and purchasing, and potential risks in IT investments. Additionally, you will become familiar with the systems found in hospitality operations. This course requires that you are comfortable researching and discussing information technologies.

MH 6761 Managerial Communications
  The chief goal of this course is to help you become a competent, confident, and versatile communicator. You will learn how to prepare clear and powerful messages—reports, oral presentations, letters, and memos—and how to approach problems analytically, so you can make thoughtful communication choices.

MH 8625 Securitization and Structured Financial Products
  (Elective - Real Estate Finance and Investment Career Track)

This course deals with the structure and analysis of securitized financial products with an emphasis on residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities (MBS). The course is intended for those who wish to acquire a working knowledge of the analysis of such securities (e.g., collateralized mortgage, obligations, commercial MBS, auto loans, and credit card–backed securities) and an understanding of the securitization process, including developments in the Asian securitization markets. The course’s subject matter necessitates a highly analytic and quantitative approach, and students are required to have a strong background in finance and economics. Students who have questions about preparation or background should contact the instructor.

Pre-requisite: General intro finance class with some discussion about fixed-income securities would be sufficient.

MH 6305 Advanced Hospitality Operations Management
  (Elective - Revenue & Operation Management Career Track)

Operations management is the study of how things work. In this class, we will discuss how operations management can be used to help a hospitality company compete. We will discuss the Asian and Singaporean hospitality markets and then focus in on several service processes of a specific hotel.

Pre-requisite: ADM 6605 - Yield Management -or- HADM 6606 – Restaurant Revenue Management

MH 6726 Product and Pricing Management
  (Elective - Marketing and Revenue Management Career Track)

This course adopts a strategic and practical approach to product and pricing management and is designed for the graduate student who is interested in learning about the deployment of product and pricing strategies in the hospitality industry. It focuses on two major activities that hospitality managers are typically responsible for: (1) analysis of market information, and (2) developing and executing product and pricing strategies.

Students will explore a series of conceptual and managerial issues in product and pricing management in the hospitality industry. The course draws key concepts, theories and tools from an eclectic mix of knowledge domains including marketing strategy, buyer behaviour, services marketing and operations, statistics, finance and information technology. Course topics include marketing planning, competitor and customer analysis, developing product strategy, brand equity management, customer experience management, product innovation, customer analytics, strategic pricing, managing pricing competition, costing and financial analysis of pricing decisions.

MH 6629 IT and E-Commerce for Hospitality Marketing
  (Elective - Revenue Management & Marketing Career Track)

This course seeks to equip participants with an appreciation of how IT and, more specifically, E-Commerce are not just strategic but also critical resources for marketing and related activities in the hospitality industry. Course participants will learn how to identify, plan and apply E-Commerce and other relevant technologies in the hospitality business for effective and successful marketing and operations. The course focuses on concepts and applications rather than on specific techniques or technologies. The emphasis is on the development of enabling frameworks and conceptual models to achieve the objectives mentioned.

The course is targeted at business executives with responsibilities for marketing and operations in the hospitality industry. The course deploys case studies and research articles from the hospitality industry and other relevant sectors to clarify fundamentals, new developments, emerging issues and best practices. The course is structured to enable participants to also learn from each other and share experiences, views, information and resources related to the course. A common theme which is emphasized throughout the course is the need for today’s business executives to be proactive in the successful exploitation of IT and E-Commerce not just in marketing but also in business as a whole.
