Ph.D. in Hospitality Management

Application Requirements

  • Submit the graduate program application form to Cornell's Graduate School by February 01 of the year in which you plan to enroll.

  • Enclose payment of the $70 application fee, payable to Cornell University, with the application. Applicants from outside of the United States may send an international money order payable in United States dollars.

  • Enclose with your application a résumé or C.V. that includes a detailed description of dates and specific duties performed for each job.

  • Arrange to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test or GMAT through the Educational Testing Service (ETS).  If you have already taken the GMAT, ask ETS to send us your score; a previous GMAT score is acceptable if it is less than five years old. To ensure proper reporting of your test results to the Hotel School, indicate 5JW-C3-61 on the registration form.

  • Arrange for official transcripts of all college or university academic work (that is, any formal education beyond secondary school) to be sent to our office (180 Statler Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853-6902). The transcripts must list all courses and grades, the degree earned, and conferral date of degree.

Students who have completed degrees outside the U.S. are encouraged to review their degree eligibility and submit an evaluation of their transcripts that provides the U.S. equivalent of the credits earned (for example, by the World Education Services). If your transcript is not in English, please submit an original copy as well as an official and certified English translation.

  • Arrange for at least two original letters of recommendation to be submitted to the Graduate School on the forms supplied with the application. One letter must be from a college-level instructor, and one must be from a professional source or reference.

  • If your native language is not English, you will need to provide proof of your English language competency by taking the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  Only students who have studied for two or more years in English at a college or university in a country where English is the official language are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.  Results of both exams are valid for two years.

The Admissions Committee will review all completed applications and invite the strongest candidates to come for interviews. These candidates will be required to complete two or more interviews on campus with members of our graduate faculty in order to complete the admissions process. Interviews are usually completed in March and admissions decisions are distributed in April via mail.

Other Requirements

Full-time hospitality industry work experience is required for admission to all graduate programs at the Hotel School.
